Sustainability and Environmental Change in Museum Practice

Hosted by CIMAM’s Sustainability and Ecology Working Group, this workshop provides an opportunity to hear from, and ask questions of, colleagues and allies who are championing new and innovative ways of responding to climate and ecological emergencies.

Relevant to both individuals and institutions working in the contemporary art museum sector the session aims to share best practices and foster collaboration across our community.

Introduced by Frances Morris, Director, Tate Modern, and moderated by Rhana Devenport, Director, Art Gallery of Southern Australia.

Participants include:

- Desirée Blomberg, Manager, Exhibition Coordination & Loans, Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

Desirée Blomberg is the Manager of Exhibition Coordination and Loans at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. She began her employment at the museum as Exhibitions Registrar in 2002 and has since then worked with managing exhibitions, incoming loans and touring international exhibitions. In the current position Desirée in charge of the development of procedures related to loans in and out, exhibition planning and touring exhibitions. She is the Swedish representative in the Board of the Nordic Registrars Group and in 2014 Desirée was a member of the Organizing Committee for the European Registrars Conference in Helsinki. She is one of the creators of the Courier Training Framework, a tool for developing and delivering training for couriers traveling with artworks and an effort to promote best practice in the museum and gallery sector. Desirée holds a Master of Arts in Art History and Ethnology from Uppsala University, Sweden.

- Jeremy Deller, Artist, London.

Jeremy Deller (b. 1966 in London; lives and works in London) studied Art History at the Courtauld Institute and at Sussex University. Deller won the Turner Prize in 2004 for his work ‘Memory Bucket’ and represented Britain in the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. He has been producing projects over the past two decades which have influenced the conventional map of contemporary art. He began making artworks in the early 1990s, often showing them outside conventional galleries.

Deller has exhibited extensively worldwide with selected solo exhibitions including: ‘Wir haben die Schnauze voll’, Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn (2020); Skulptur Projekte Münster (2017); ‘The Infinitely Variable Ideal of the Popular’, ‘English Magic’, British Pavilion, 55th Venice Biennale, Venice (2013), touring to William Morris Gallery, London; ‘Joy in People’, Hayward Gallery, London (2012), ‘It Is What It Is: New Museum, New York (2009), ‘Procession’, Cornerhouse, Manchester (2009); ‘Folk Archive’ with Alan Kane Palais de Tokyo, Paris and Barbican Art Gallery, London (2004); and ‘Unconvention’, Centre for Visual Arts, Cardiff (1999).

Deller has curated numerous projects including: ‘Iggy Pop Life Class’, Brooklyn Museum (2016); ‘Love is Enough: William Morris and Andy Warhol’, Modern Art Oxford (2014); and ‘All That is Solid Melts Into Air’, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester (2014).

- Rachel Kent, Head of International Touring Exhibitions, Tate Modern, London.

Rachel Kent is Head of International Touring Exhibitions at Tate Modern. She oversees Tate Modern’s international partnerships, building key relationships with a global network to develop and realise exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Rachel manages the loan programme to Tate Modern’s exhibition and displays. After many years realising complex international projects and exhibitions, Rachel now leads on the sustainability of exhibition making at Tate, from the conception through to realisation.

Rachel is currently a Committee Member for Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge.

Prior to joining Tate, Rachel was a curator at the Hayward Gallery, London, and before that at Modern Art Oxford. Rachel completed an MA in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art where she co-curated the exhibition ‘The Straight or Crooked Way’.

- Caitlin Southwick, Director of Ki Culture, Secretary of ICOM Sustainability Group, and CEO and Founder of Sustainability in Conservation, London.

Caitlin Southwick is the Founder and Executive Director of Ki Culture. She holds a Professional Doctorate in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage from the University of Amsterdam. Caitlin has worked in the conservation field for nine years in museums and sites around the world, including the Vatican Museums, The Getty Conservation Institute, The Uffizi Gallery and Easter Island. She is the Secretary of the Working Group on Sustainability for the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and a former Professional Member of the American Institute of Conservation (AIC) Sustainability Committee.

This workshop will last approximately 45 minutes followed by Q&A and a discussion of another 45 minutes.
