Rafael Tamayo

Biography

Rafael Tamayo is Director of the Museum of Modern Art of Medellín (MAMM), Colombia, where he leads institutional strategies that advance contemporary artistic practices through interdisciplinary exhibitions, public programmes, and international partnerships. His work focuses on expanding audiences and fostering critical dialogue between art, society, and memory in Latin America. He also served as General Manager of the 2025 Antioquia and Medellín Art Biennial, further strengthening his experience in leading large-scale cultural initiatives.

With more than fifteen years of experience as a university professor and researcher in the social sciences and humanities, Tamayo has combined academic practice with senior public-sector leadership. He has served as Director of the Bogotá Public Library Network, Director of the Museum of Memory of Colombia, and Head of International Relations at Colombia’s Ministry of Culture. His professional experience also includes work with foundations supporting the inclusion of children and youth, as well as consultancy for UNESCO in Latin America on promoting World Heritage through education.

Tamayo holds a PhD in History from the National University of Colombia, a master’s degree in international law from Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas, and a specialization in Business Law from Universidad Externado de Colombia. He is also trained in law and theology from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.
