Natalija Vujoševic

Biography

Natalija Vujošević is a curator whose practice lies at the intersection of contemporary art, archival research, and institutional transformation. Over the past decade, she has developed a research-driven curatorial approach focused on knowledge production, the reactivation of cultural memory, and the recovery of overlooked artistic histories.

In 2012, she founded the Institute of Contemporary Art (ISU), an independent platform dedicated to research, education, and the development of archival infrastructures. Through ISU, Vujošević has initiated and led collaborative, process-based projects exploring historiography, public memory, and the social role of art institutions. A central project within this practice is the Archive of the Cetinje Biennials, a long-term research initiative that reconstructs and critically examines the Biennials (1991–2004), situating them within post-Yugoslav transformations and highlighting their emancipatory role in local and regional art contexts.

Since 2022, Vujošević has served as curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro, where she continues to develop collaborative and research-based methodologies within an institutional setting. Among her key initiatives is the Art of Nonaligned Countries Collection Laboratory, developed with Anita Ćulafić, Marina Čelebić, and Nada Baković. The project engages with a significant yet under-researched collection of approximately 800 artworks from 56 countries, assembled by The Art Gallery of The Nonaligned Countries Josip Broz Tito (1981–1995) in Titograd (now Podgorica). Through exhibitions, research, and public programmes, the Laboratory examines the legacy of the Non-Aligned Movement and its decolonial, anti-imperial, anti-capitalist, and anti-fascist dimensions, challenging its marginalization within dominant art-historical narratives.

Her international curatorial practice includes the realization of the Montenegro Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). In 2024, she received the Igor Zabel Award grant, recognizing outstanding contributions to visual art and culture in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
