About Yokohama Museum of Art

Yokohama Museum of Art is a municipal art museum that opened to the public on November 3, 1989 in Yokohama, one of the largest cities in Japan with a population of 3.7 million people. Its founding policies of “look, create, and learn” are manifested in the iconic architecture designed by Tange Kenzo, which consists of galleries for special and permanent exhibitions, professionally-equipped studios for hands-on workshops, and a library that holds publications and reference materials on art.

The collection of over 13,000 artworks, consisting of paintings, prints, sculptures, crafts, photography, and experimental film, starts from the late 19th century, marking the opening of the port of Yokohama, and continues to the present, tracing the history of modern and contemporary art through the exchanges made between Japan and the world.

As Yokohama is where one of the first commercial photography studios was established, the museum has a dedicated gallery for photography and holds historic as well as modern and contemporary photographic works.

While serving the local community as the only public art museum in the city, the museum also hosts the Yokohama Triennale in partnership with the City of Yokohama and funding from the national government to promote cultural exchange through contemporary art.

Under the leadership of Kuraya Mika, who was appointed as director in 2020, the museum is currently undergoing renovation and is scheduled to reopen in fiscal year 2023 with a renewed set of ideas, exhibitions and programs.
