Sharjah Biennial 16: to carry is a multivocal exploration of what we carry and how, reflecting the perspectives of five curators and their gathered resonances. The theme examines precarity in unfamiliar spaces while staying rooted in cultural inheritances, bridging pasts and imagined futures. It asks: What do we carry when traveling, fleeing, surviving, or staying? How do we navigate between territories and time? This Biennial proposes a collective wayfinding—an insistent act of looking inward, backward, and across—against tides of tyranny and erasure. Curatorial projects explore societal, technological, and ritualistic possibilities of change, offering space for experiments, collaborations, and interwoven narratives. The Biennial becomes a threshold for tenderness and rage, embracing failures and divergences. Curators Alia Swastika, Amal Khalaf, Megan Tamati-Quennell, Natasha Ginwala, and Zeynep Öz present works by over 190 participants, including 200+ new commissions, across Sharjah.
