Moderna Museet is a state museum with a national mandate for modern and contemporary art. The collection is at the forefront of its kind in Europe. The museum is a meeting place for people and art with a strong foundation in society and the world at large. With its world-class programme of exhibitions, collection-based projects and educational activities, Moderna Museet has substantial local presence and international reach. The exchange with other art institutions around the world is extensive. The museum is located in Stockholm and Malmö.

The curator position with responsibility for the collection of international art from 1989 onwards is part of the group Art, which is a division of the department of Exhibitions & Collection at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. There are six curators with collection responsibility in the group.  

Job description

As curator with responsibility for the collection of international art from 1989 onwards, your primary duties would be:
-To maintain and develop the museum’s expertise within the field of contemporary international art.
-To contribute to the development of the museum’s future exhibition plan.
-To lead and execute exhibition projects within the framework of the exhibition plan.  
-To contribute towards and develop the museum’s collection presentation and install art in the exhibition galleries and spaces dedicated to the collection.  
-To contribute to the development of the collection and actively participate in acquisition and loan committee meetings.
-To write catalogue texts, exhibition texts and articles for other purposes.
-To expand and strengthen the museum’s contacts with artists and art institutions.  

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with:
-Academic qualifications with art-historical focus or a corresponding relevant education.
-Excellent knowledge of international contemporary art.
-Specialised knowledge within a specific area of international contemporary art.
-Thorough knowledge of modern art.
-Extensive experience of working independently with art exhibitions on an international level, including managing budgets.
-A broad network within the international art scene.
-Excellent English language skills.
-Experience of working research-based and writing advanced texts for a specialised readership, as well as more accessible texts for a wider audience.
-An extensive publication record within the art field.

Other desirable qualifications include:

-A specialisation within an area of non-Western international contemporary art.
-Experience of working within an art institution.
-Experience of working with a collection.
-A postgraduate research degree.

You are goal-oriented, structured and straightforward, while also being responsive to the needs of the organisation and your colleagues. Your interest in and dedication to international contemporary art is strong. You are communicative and have a passion for working in an outward-looking manner, inspiring those around you and conveying your knowledge to the public. Your workplace will be at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Within the framework of this position it is expected that you are able to travel and participate in meaningful contexts even outside of regular working hours.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
