About Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio)
The institution's main areas are: Modern & Contemporary Art.
The Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro is a cultural institution dedicated to art, film, and research, with a special focus on Brazil’s rich creative history. Its visual arts collection includes over 16,000 works of mainly Brazilian modern and contemporary art, alongside key pieces from Europe, North America, and Latin America. The museum is also home to a film collection of around 50,000 titles, a specialized art library with 50,000 volumes, and two extensive archives: one documenting Brazilian art and the museum’s own history, and another preserving over 3 million items related to the history of cinema in Brazil.
But MAM Rio is more than a collection, it's a living, evolving space. With a dynamic program of exhibitions, performances, educational initiatives, festivals, and daily film screenings, the museum connects people through culture all year round.
At the heart of MAM Rio is a commitment to research, whether through academic inquiry or more experimental, curatorial, and artistic methods. Researchers and artists alike are invited to explore the museum’s vast resources. Conferences, internal research projects, and ongoing work on institutional memory ensure that the museum remains not only a place of reflection but also of discovery, dialogue, and creation.
