About Instituto Inhotim

Instituto Inhotim, a museum of contemporary art and botanical garden, arises at the intersection of art, nature, architecture and education. In an area comprising 140 hectares, visitors walk amidst more than 1,000 plant species from different continents and an artistic collection made up of sculptures, installations, photographs, paintings and many other mediums by notable names in both national and international contemporary art.

A visit to the galleries and the experience of encountering large-scale external artworks, involves walking amidst lush landscaping, themed gardens along winding paths and the Viveiro Educador (Teaching Nursery) – a botanical complex with a tropical greenhouse, meliponary and equipment dedicated to research and environmental education. It is this integrated experience of artistic creation, nature and territory, part of an always lively program, that makes Inhotim a unique place in the world.

Beyond exhibitions and commissions, curatorial research also informs a dynamic public program that fosters interdisciplinary dialogue among art, education, nature, and music, through seminars, concerts, performances, workshops, and guided visits. Since its foundation, the commissioning of new artistic projects has been central to Inhotim’s collection. Through these commissions, curators and artists collaborate closely with multiple departments across the institution to develop works conceived specifically for Inhotim.
