About Darat al Funun - The Khalid Shoman Foundation
We aim to provide a platform for contemporary Arab artists, to support art practices and artistic exchange, to stimulate critical discourse, and to research, document and archive Arab art.
Our story goes back to 1988. We are today a home for the arts housed in six renovated historical buildings and warehouses, with a restored archaeological site in the garden.
The Khalid Shoman Collection
Begun in the early eighties, The Khalid Shoman Collection is one of the earliest collections dedicated exclusively to contemporary art of the Arab world.
Now representing over one hundred and forty modern and contemporary artists and a wide range of media, including works on paper, oil on canvas, photography, artist books, sculpture, video, and installation, the collection reflects the shifts and transformations in the region’s artistic practices over the last four decades.
