Museo Banco de México
The construction of diverse communities that establish dialogues through the exchange of plural voices and perspectives for the confirmation of common languages is a task that the Banco de México Museum carries out as part of its commitment to society.
An example of this is the ART | BANKNOTE | MACULATURA | REFINES | DISEÑO program, a pioneering initiative in the link between art and a central bank, uniting the artistic sector with the Banco de México in a joint objective of experimentation and creation. From the reuse of unique and exclusive access materials derived from the banknote manufacturing process, artists create works that are exhibited in various venues and that are integrated for safekeeping within the cultural heritage of the institution. In this way, the waste material that arises during the quality inspection of this manufacturing process acquires new life in the artistic pieces that, with free themes, open avenues of possibility for the reflection of topics that range from the diversity and inclusion of communities to global events such as the promotion of environmental preservation.
This program has seven editions in which various formats have been explored: in the first five editions, the use of two-dimensional supports was explored, such as cotton and amate handmade paper and linen canvas. In the 6th and 7th editions, the two-dimensional aspect was left behind with the creation of art-object boxes and mobiles. Currently, the production of a new material is being developed with polymer panels developed by the Bank, which works for the creation of three-dimensional works.
The value resulting from this program has a long-term impact through the promotion of new generations of artists, the research and exploration of techniques and materials, as well as the establishment of possibilities for multidisciplinary innovation.
This initiative generates a rapprochement with society through the exhibition of the works created and the publication of catalogues, thereby promoting the dissemination of cultural messages and generating a lasting memory of the program, testimony to the contribution of this alliance of technological development and creativity.
Explain in one sentence why you think the project you nominate is outstanding and could serve as an example for the entire community of modern and contemporary art museums.
The ARTE | BILLETE | MACULATURA | REFINES | DISEÑO program exemplifies outstanding practice by seamlessly integrating artistic innovation with the unique materials of central banknote production, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating meaningful, reflective art that bridges cultural and environmental themes, setting a benchmark for modern and contemporary art museums worldwide.
Explain why this practice or program is relevant and sustainable in creating meaningful and lasting connections with people, communities, and the museum context with a medium to long-term vision.
The program is relevant and sustainable because it repurposes unique materials from the banknote production process into innovative artworks, creating a dynamic dialogue between art and central banking. By involving artists in the re-use of these materials, the program fosters community engagement and cultural reflection on diverse themes, from inclusion to environmental preservation. Its evolution from two-dimensional works to three-dimensional creations demonstrates adaptability and ongoing relevance. The program's seven editions, including future developments with polymer panels, ensure its long-term impact on both artistic practice and public interaction, while its exhibitions and catalogs extend its reach and educational value to wider audiences.
