Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai
The Art Jameel project in Dubai has been highly successful in fostering community engagement in a relatively short period of time. In their day-to-day operations, they have successfully implemented the core activities mentioned. The fundamental first step is effective communication. The collection is classified under the overarching heading of "Learning," and is regarded as a subject area for research. The museum's recently established library incorporates elements of collection and exhibition practice, while also extending beyond these to align with the realities of the local population's lives. This has resulted in a high visitor frequency. The artist's garden is utilised for the presentation of various ecological projects, while the outdoor area is employed for a diverse range of events, including farmers' markets, flea markets, and children's parties. The tone is inclusive, the publications provided are concise and affordable, while the programme remains intellectually rigorous. The institution engages with numerous renowned global institutions and thinkers, always taking local conditions into account. It operates in a region that was previously not known for its cultural offerings and demonstrates how a programme and its offerings can be designed for a broad audience without sacrificing challenging topics and artists. The commissions include art, writing, and research, reflecting a comprehensive concept of art and culture.
Explain in one sentence why you think the project you nominate is outstanding and could serve as an example for the entire community of modern and contemporary art museums.
Art Jameel demonstrates how a programme and its offerings can be designed for a wide audience without compromising on sophisticated themes and artists; the museum is an excellent example of how to create an inviting environment for all.
Explain why this practice or program is relevant and sustainable in creating meaningful and lasting connections with people, communities, and the museum context with a medium to long-term vision.
The combination of exhibition practice, research and learning, together with a wide opening to the general public, represents an exceptional approach. I am not aware of many examples. It may be possible precisely because it is a young museum in a still young cultural scene. The term museum is not used here, although Art Jameel actively collects at a high level. All the projects have a topicality that corresponds exactly to the major issues of our time. When they make an exhibition by Samson Young, for example, and manage to make it accessible to a wide audience, it is a highly commendable achievement.
