CIMAM launches an International Call for Travel Grant Applications to attend the CIMAM 2023 Annual Conference in Buenos Aires

  • CIMAM will award over 50 Travel Grants to attend the CIMAM 2023 Annual Conference, titled “The Co-Creative Museum: Social Agency, Ethics, and Heritage”.

  • The CIMAM Travel Grant Program aims to support the curatorial and research development of applicants through their attendance at the Annual Conference where the most current concerns on contemporary art practices are being discussed.
  • Grants are addressed to modern and contemporary art museum directors and curators, researchers, and independent curators whose field of research and specialization is contemporary art theory, collections, and museums.
  • The deadline to apply is Sunday 11 June at 0:00 hrs. CEST.

Barcelona, 2 May 2023 – CIMAM, the International Committee of Museums and Collections of Modern and Contemporary Art, announces its call for applications for its Travel Grants Program, which this year will award over 50 modern and contemporary art curators, directors, and museum professionals to attend the CIMAM 2023 Annual Conference. Titled “The Co-Creative Museum: Social Agency, Ethics, and Heritage”, the conference will take place from 9 to 11 November 2023 hosted by the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, Argentina, the first Conference to offer simultaneous translation to and from Spanish.

The CIMAM Travel Grant Program aims to support the curatorial and research development of applicants through their attendance at the Annual Conference where the most current concerns on contemporary art practices are being discussed.

Grants are addressed to modern and contemporary art museum directors and curators, researchers, and independent curators whose field of research and specialization is contemporary art theory, collections, and museums.

CIMAM's 2023 Travel Grant Program has been possible thanks to the generosity of thirteen individuals and institutions at an international level that aims to support modern and contemporary art museum professionals from around the world.

Eligibility

List of eligible countries and criteria for submitting an application:

The Getty Foundation, Los Angeles

Supports around 15 professionals residing in countries with Emerging Market and Developing Economies according to the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook – except for Iran, North Korea, Syria, Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Cuba due to US restrictions.

ArtHaus, Buenos Aires

Supports over 20 modern and contemporary art museum directors and curators and related museum professionals, and independent curators residing in Argentina. Please read here for information on grants for Argentine professionals.

Aimée Labarrere de Servitje, Mexico

Supports around 3 modern and contemporary art curators, directors, and museum professionals residing in Mexico.

Byucksan Foundation, Seoul

Supports around 3 professionals residing in the Northeast Asia region (Republic of Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Mongolia).

Eloisa Haudenschild, United States

Supports around 3 professionals residing in countries with Emerging Market and Developing Economies according to the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook.

Embassy of Brazil, Buenos Aires

Supports around 4 Brazilian curators residing in Brazil.

Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Philippines

Supports around 3 modern and contemporary art curators, directors, and museum professionals residing in the Philippines.

Mercedes Vilardell March, London/Mallorca

Supports around 3 professionals residing in the African continent who are not necessarily affiliated with a museum.

OCA – Office for Contemporary Art Norway, Oslo

Supports around 3 Norwegian and Norway-based curators working within contemporary art. Priority will be given to independent and/or young and establishing curators.

Saastamoinen Foundation, Helsinki

Supports around 4 Finish curators working within modern and contemporary art.

SAHA – Supporting Contemporary Art from Turkey, Istanbul

Supports around 3 professionals residing in Turkey or Turkish passport holders residing elsewhere.

Samdani Art Foundation, Dhaka

Supports around 3 modern and contemporary art curators, directors, and museum professionals residing in countries of the South Asian region (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka).

Spanish professionals, Spain

Supports around 3 directors, curators, and professionals of modern and contemporary art museums as well as independent curators residing in Spain.

CIMAM Travel Grants provide an excellent opportunity for modern and contemporary art professionals to engage with some of the most pressing issues facing the art world today and to connect with their peers from around the globe. With this program, CIMAM hopes to encourage the development of curatorial and research practices among these individuals, fostering a more dynamic and innovative contemporary art ecosystem.

Who can apply for a travel grant?

  • Museum directors and curators, researchers, and independent curators whose field of study and specialization is contemporary art theory, collections, and museums, and whose major part of their professional activity is related to the functions of an art museum.
  • Applicants must not be involved in any commercial or profit-making activity.
  • All professionals who fit the profile described above are eligible to apply, with priority given to directors and novice curators (with less than ten years of experience).
  • Travel Grants are available to applicants who are from geographic regions that have been deemed eligible by its Founders.
  • Applicants who have received CIMAM grants from the same sponsor may only be considered for a new grant after 3 years from the award of the previous grant unless the support received was for assistance in a virtual format - in that case, they may reapply.

What expenses are covered by the travel grant?

  • Conference registration includes access to all conference sessions, lunches, dinners, refreshment breaks, access to organized visits, and coach service to and from planned visits during the 3 conference days.
  • Round trip economy flight tickets.
  • Four-night accommodation in one of the hotels recommended by CIMAM (check-in 8 Nov. / check-out 12 Nov.)
  • Becoming a member of CIMAM for the period awarded.

Application Process

  • Interested applicants must complete an online application form that includes a brief resume, a statement of motivation, and two letters of recommendation from professionals or academics familiar with the candidate's qualifications.
  • CIMAM members (those who have paid their 2023-25 membership dues) are exempt from providing two letters of recommendation but must provide the names of two references.

Selection Process

  • Applications are evaluated and awarded by the CIMAM Travel Grant Committee, composed of CIMAM Board members and travel grant sponsors.
  • Grants are conferred based on the assessment of the candidate’s genuine financial need, the potential benefit to his/her development and/or research, and the relevance of field experience in relation to the objectives of CIMAM.

The deadline for applications is Thursday, June 11, at 00:00 am CEST.
