30 October 2024

Bradford, Mark

Mark Bradford, the renowned contemporary artist best known for his large-scale abstract paintings created out of paper and recipient of the 2023 National Medal of Arts, will be one of the keynote speakers at CIMAM's upcoming Annual Conference, to be held in Los Angeles from 6-8 December. The conference will explore the theme "Sustainable Futures: How? When? For Whom?"

In this recent interview with Mark Rappolt for ArtReview, Bradford discusses his dual focus on community and creative practice. In addition to his latest exhibition, Exotica, currently on display at Hauser & Wirth in Hong Kong, Bradford shared insights into his Art + Practice nonprofit in South Los Angeles. His efforts at Art + Practice emphasize empowering young people, particularly those from marginalized communities, by fostering access to art and conversations that tackle social and economic challenges.

Bradford will speak on the first day of the conference, introducing the two perspectives "What is our Agency?: The Contemporary Art Museum and Climate Crisis" and "Sustainable Ecosystems: Rethinking Museum Collections and Buildings within the Urban and Social Realm.".

For those attending this year's CIMAM Annual Conference, Bradford's keynote will explore art's role in community building and social change, themes central to his lifelong work.
