We are happy to welcome Marshall N. Price to CIMAM!
"I have been aware of CIMAM for many years and after doing some research, it was clear that the organization was at the forefront of professional practice for curators and museum directors. I belong to several other professional organizations, but CIMAM is the most international and would open up new horizons to me professionally. I am particularly interested in curatorial practice (as I teach it at Duke) and learning about evolving curatorial methodologies from various parts of the globe. This, along with the expanded network of international colleagues that CIMAM would offer me is invaluable to a successful curatorial career. These types of professional organizations are where new ideas are exchanged, where curatorial intersections can happen, and where the field can evolve".
Marshall N. Price, Chief Curator and Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham, USA.
"I understand my role as curator as serving the various publics to which we are responsible. As I am at a university art museum, which is also the only art museum in the city of Durham, this means that I serve the university community most immediately but working outward from that (like concentric circles) I serve communities in Durham, the state of North Carolina, the entire southeastern region of the US, along with national and international audiences mostly via digital outreach. I believe that curators are mediators of culture, a very important responsibility that comes with great power. I also believe in working collaboratively among departments and with colleagues outside of the museum. Thus, the curatorial role, in my opinion, is not one of sole authorship with a single figure dictating knowledge, rather it’s one of collaboration, sharing, and ultimately, in a sense, caring (to return to the Latin roots of the word) for the community which one serves".
