Tour of the Casa Planas Centre for Artistic Research

The Planas Archive is the largest European archive dedicated to tourism and is located in the former photographic developing factory and laboratory, which has now been rescued as a creation centre for artists.

The archive and the creation centre are currently managed by the visual artist and researcher Marina Planas with an artistic focus on how to relate to archives from the perspective of contemporary art.

With this in mind, she has developed the Art Investigation Programme, a programme of research residencies for creators and thinkers in relation to the Planas Archive.

The programme focuses on the way in which artists and researchers look to the past to confront various current social and political problems through art projects related to historical records that intersect not only with memory and the past, but also with the bodily experience of the present. The programme brings together different thematic lines with different professional profiles from different geographies that use, appropriate and reshape historical archive material, such as photographs, texts, objects, as well as audio, film and television recordings, to create new readings that destabilise established narratives and suggest a new archival and multiplying order of the Planas Archive.

This programme is committed to artistic research as an innovative, ecological and sustainable model of the cultural economy. It generates a professional context for independent thinkers and creators to preserve memory and build new futures.

Tour of the Planas Archive

The cultural tours through the Planas Archive are a journey through time and the recent history of the Balearic Islands.

This collection contains 3 million images that show the relationship between photography and the history of tourism and is made up of documents from the Casa Planas photographic company. Photographs of the industrial postcard that travelled around the world promoting the beginnings of Spain as a tourist destination; photographs of landscapes and their transformation; reports on the first hotels and photographs of cultural events in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

The company grew to 14 establishments and marked the beginning of a new image industry. On the other hand, the passion of the businessman Josep Planas i Montanyà for images can be seen through his extensive collection of cameras and photographic material of great historical value.

A tour of the Planas archive is an indescribable experience that allows us to explore the memory, heritage and identity of the Balearic Islands.
