Position description

  • Full-time, permanent position.
  • The appointment will be conditional on an initial 6-month probationary period; termination thereafter by either party will require written notice of 3 months.
  • Core part of the MCA’s Leadership Team.
  • Reports directly to the MCA Director.

Overview of the Curatorial & Digital Division

The Curatorial & Digital Division is 1 of 4 divisions at the MCA. The purpose of the Curatorial & Digital Division is to initiate, develop and deliver the presentation and care of artworks and the ideas they generate, respecting the centrality of artists and art in those processes.

Members of the Curatorial & Digital Division collaborate to conceive, research and deliver all of the MCA’s exhibitions, offsite projects, commissions, displays and digital programs, as well as caring for, maintaining and developing the Collection that sits at the heart of the MCA’s offer. Within Curatorial & Digital, there are three clusters: Collection & Exhibitions Management; Curatorial; and Digital.

Overview of the position

Reporting to the MCA Director, the Director, Curatorial & Digital is one of a team of 4 divisional directors supporting the leadership of the MCA and the shaping of its future. This role leads in the delivery of the MCA’s art content and digital programs, supporting the MCA Director in providing the intellectual and creative leadership of the museum.

The incumbent will develop a content and programs strategy and coordinate its implementation, including delivering program services and nurturing and leading the key relationships with artists, dealers and other museums and galleries that will underpin its success. They will hold the overview of the exhibitions program, offsite projects, commissions, collection development initiatives and displays. The incumbent will champion research and documentation and improve the processes surrounding the long-term preservation of these precious intellectual assets. They will oversee the digital strategy, ensuring that the MCA is telling deeper, richer stories and building more engaging relationships with artists and audiences.

The Director, Curatorial and Digital is responsible for the Collection and exhibition management and the curatorial and digital program budgets and for the leadership of a team of 5 direct reports: Chief Curator; Senior Curator, C3West; Head of Digital; Head of Collection & Exhibition Management, and Administrative Assistant, Curatorial & Digital.
