Hetti Perkins, Arrernte and Kalkadoon curator and writer, Sydney, Australia

Curator, writer and presenter Hetti Perkins is a member of the Arrernte and Kalkadoon Aboriginal communities. She is the recipient of the University of NSW Alumni Award 2017 Arts and Culture and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Australia 2017 Award. In 2018 she was awarded an Australia Council for the Arts Fellowship.

She is Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow and Research Fellow, Centre of Visual Art (COVA), the University of Melbourne. In 2019 Hetti was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of New South Wales.

Hetti has worked with Indigenous visual art for thirty years and was senior curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. She has worked on projects for the Biennale of Sydney, documenta and the Venice Biennale. She wrote and presented two national documentary series, art + soul, for ABC Television in 2010 and 2014.

Currently, Hetti is curatorial advisor to the City of Sydney on the commissioning of a series of major public artworks for Sydney city for the Eora Journey. Along with Jonathan Jones, Hetti curates the annual SOUTH EAST Market at Carriageworks, Sydney, featuring artists of southeast Aboriginal communities. She is a member of the Cultural Advisory Committee for TARNANTHI | Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Visual Arts Festival; the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Strategy Panel of the Australia Council for the Arts, and the Indigenous Advisory Group of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
